Are you a good person? How good? Good enough? The Bible tells us that none of us are good enough (Romans 3:10,
Ephesians 2:8-9).
We have all broken God's laws (the Bible calls it sin, Romans 3:23). You don't think so. Have you ever told a lie? How about stolen something... no matter how small? God expects perfection to be allowed into Heaven (Matthew 5:48). Are you a liar? A thief? If you answered "yes", you're not perfect. If we break one law, its the same as breaking them all (James 2:10).
Most people know about God's love (John 3:16, 1 John 4:8b), but they don't realize He is also just. That means He must punish anyone that breaks His law (Exodus 34:7).
Our prospect for Heaven isn't looking very good right now, is it? Just remember God loves everyone and He doesn't want anyone to go to Hell (2 Peter 3:9b).
Jesus came to pay our penalty for breaking God's law because we can't do it ourself (Romans 5:8). He willingly accepted the punishment you should've received (Isaiah 53:6). God showed His approval of the payment by raising Jesus from the dead (Romans 10:9).
Now, all we have to do is accept His gift to us (Romans 6:23). How do I do that?
Admit to God...
- that you have broken His law
- you know there's nothing you can do to help yourself
- you accept Jesus' payment for your sin
