2009 Jamaica Mission
St. Ann’s Parrish, Jamaica
Dec. 5th thru Dec. 11
Dear former and future team members,
I have to make a change in our destination for the week of Dec, 5th
through Dec. 11th 2009.
Due to circumstances beyond our control, we will not be returning to the
Yucatan this year.
Conditions there are not positive and I have made a decision not to
return until conditions improve.
Some of you may not be familiar with the new destination which will be
St. Ann’s Parrish, Jamaica, West Indies. I have worked in this area many
times and seen God do some amazing things.
In Jamaica we have more control over or own time and we can schedule
nightly meetings for sharing and for praise and worship. The schedule is
more relaxed and the scenery is astounding.
This team will have a spiritual leader, a worship leader and two
mission team leaders from our church. There will be a well planned
emphasis on spiritual awakening as well as evangelism and construction.
There will be a heightened emphasis on spiritual renewal during this
week. This will be a week where God speaks and we will be making time
each day to hear from Him
Two definite items on this team: There is construction and there is
evangelism that can be freely done. There is also a connection to a
local church called St. Ann’s Bay Baptist Church.
The people we work with in Jamaica literally live under pieces of tin
and or in slightly better shanty shacks. There is a huge gap between
“the haves” and the “have not’s”.
I will be holding an interest meeting Sunday Evening May 3rd
following the church service in the sanctuary. Richard Skinner we can
discuss by email I will email you the details.
This journey will cost a little more than the last one but will be
better in many ways as well as an all inclusive.
The journey departs from the Albany Airport….yeah!!!!!!!! I got Delta
group sales to get on the stick and we made it happen. Those of you who
have never been may not realize how much better this is for the team to
fly out of Albany. The flight itinerary is pasted below.
Also I am pasting an excerpt from the mission director about what type
of work they are doing there.
“…That is a great
time for going to Jamaica and the need there is great, as you know.
We have started a new
project on the west end of St. Ann’s Bay, a community center in a
community called Seville Heights. This is in partnership with the St.
Ann Bay Baptist Church and is a result of what they see the Steertown
Center being able to do. We have just started on this with the perimeter
walls being done now. By December we would be working on the main
building and could use all the help we can get.
We also are
continuing to build shelters/houses in Steertown. We just built numbers
50-51 earlier this month and have a long waiting list of those needing
housing. There is an extra cost to this as it takes $2000 to build one
of these for someone. It can be built in 4 days or less, especially when
you have someone with building experience. Either of these projects
would more than work for your team and meet a tremendous need in
difficult parts of Jamaica.”

Let me explain a little about the journey to St.
Ann’s Bay Jamaica. We are flying out of Albany because it is hard to ask
a team to get up at 4am to ride a bus for 3 hours to fly for 4 hours and
then ride a bus again for 3 hours.
So there is a 2 ½ hour to 3 hour bus ride from
Montego Bay to St. Ann’s Bay. The first day is spent traveling and the
last day is spent traveling.
1.
We will arrive In Montego Bay on a Saturday and will do nothing
that day except travel and set up for the week and have an orientation
and worship meeting that night. It will be at least 7pm before you get
to your bed and you will be tired.
2.
Sunday we attend St. Ann’s Bay Baptist Church and we will go to
James Bond Falls that afternoon. (Where Dr. No was filmed) It’s a day to
rest, play and worship before a week of work.
3.
Monday we work and do evangelism, Bible clubs with local
children . Monday night we share and worship together.
4.
Tuesday same as Monday.
5.
Wednesday same as Tuesday, possibly go to church in Steertown
that night.
6.
Thursday we will go to Dunn’s River Falls as tourist and climb
from sea level to almost 700 ft above sea level great fun that anyone
can do. You do not have to be an athlete to do this it is a state park.
We have our last worship service in Jamaica, probably on the beach.
7.
Friday we drive back to Montego Bay (MoBay) and fly home. This
gives you Saturday to get your life back together.
If you read the excerpt from the mission director
(above) you will see what we will be doing as far as construction. If we
raise extra money before we leave we can build homes for shanty
dwellers.
Anyone can apply for a position on this team. This
is a level one team with few restrictions. Because we are flying out of
Albany and all airfare meals, transportation, lodging, activities and
project costs are included in the price of $1,385. You will not have to
purchase anything from the time you arrive at the Albany Airport until
you return to the Albany airport. We do offer a discount to medical
personnel who apply and agree to serve as a team medic. This discount is
limited to the first 3 medics to apply.
You can bring along a small amount of money to go
the store for snacks each night if you are a junk food junkie and you
may want to shop in the straw market for unique gifts and souvenirs. I
have never spent more than $75.
You will have the opportunity to snorkel along
several miles of reef. This is a guided tour and IS NOT INCLUDED IN YOUR
PRICE. This is an optional activity that will cost you around 15 or 20
per person and they provide the gear. You can bring your own gear and
snorkel on your own without a fee but this activity must be approved by
the Team leader based on your ability to swim and no one will snorkel
alone. The compound we will stay in has a pool and yes it will be warm
enough to swim in December.
I will be helping individuals who need to raise
money for this trip with fund raising tips and techniques. Please see me
if you want help with this type of thing. Lack of funds is not a
legitimate excuse if God has directed you to this specifically. Where
God has called you there is provision and I can help you find it.
We will be taking a large team on this run so
spread the word and see me to apply.
